You Can't Hide - Karen Rose

Book Blurb:
Terror has forever changed the life of psychiatrist Tess Ciccotelli. Someone is tormenting her patients, pushing them to commit suicide, and setting her up to take the blame. But Tess can't break her oath to protect her patients' privacy at all costs. Even when detective Aidan Reagan demands a list of everyone she's treating. Even when the mounting danger threatens Tess herself.

Aidan doesn't like anyone who stalls his cases. Still, he can't help but admire Tess's fierce loyalty to her patients, especially when it becomes clear that a nameless, facelss enemy is set on destroying her career, her family , and finally, Tess herself. As Aidan's heart softens, the killer's will hardens, and one thing becomes clear - the noose is tightening around Tess's neck.

In My Own Words:
There is someone terrorizing Tess' patients, enough to kill themselves.  Tess can't help but blame herself, especially when the body count starts to rise and she seems to be two steps behind the killer.  Feeling alone and isolated, seems to be what the killer wants, and knowing that she is persona non grata at the police station due to a case she had worked on, she wasn't sure she would get any help or protection from them.

Aidan is a cop, first and foremost, and while he doesn't want to like Tess because of the case where she let a killer "live it up" in a psych ward instead of death row, he can't help but admire how she stands up for what she believes.  It soon becomes clear that the killer wants not only to destroy Tess' clients, but they won't stop until she has nothing left.  What they don't have is time, what they need....is more time.  Will they put all of the clues together before time runs out?

Review:
I have come to rely on Karen Rose to deliver nasty villains, and twisted plots and I was not disappointed here.  I thought I had the killer figured out a few times and I didn't find out until it was revealed in the book, and I was horrified.  There was a wonderful mixture of romance, thriller and terror in You Can't Hide.  We meet new characters that I am hoping will be getting their own books down the line, Vito, Tess' brother for one, Murphy, Aidan's partner for another.  I had a hard time putting this book down and when the killer was revealed, I had so many mixed emotions.  Can't wait to see what is in store for me next.

Redwood Bend - Robyn Carr

Book Blurb:
Katie Malone and her twin boys' trip along the beautiful mountain roads to Virgin River is stopped short by a tire as flat as her failed romance. To make matters worse, the rain has set in, the boys are hungry and Katie is having trouble putting on a spare. As she stands at the side of the road pondering her next move, she hears a distinct rumble. The sight of the sexy, leather-clad bikers who pull up beside her puts her imagination into overdrive.

Dylan Childress and his buddies are on the motorcycle trip of a lifetime. But the sight of a woman in distress stops them in their tracks. And while the guys are checking out her car, she and Dylan are checking out one another.

In one brief moment, the world tilts on its axis and any previous plans Katie and Dylan might have had for their futures are left at the side of the road.

In My Own Words:
After dealing with the disastrous past year where Katie and her twin boys were in hiding because some crazy people were after her brother, she is ready to settle down, put down some roots and move closer to her brother, Conner, who she is very close with.  On the way to Virgin River, her mammoth SUV gets a flat tire, in the middle of the rain, on an unfamiliar road.  Knowing she can change it, she huffs it out in the rain only to realize, the lug nuts are going to be a problem....

On a motorcycle trip to see some sites, Dylan thought the last thing he would find would be someone at all to warm his bed, let alone one with kids.  Dylan's number one rule, no dating someone with kids, to complicated and to much like a family.  Coming from a family of dysfunction, he knows he is not the kid or marrying type.  While stopping to help change a tire.....his whole life changes.

Notable Quote:
"Best sex of your life?" he asked in a whisper.
"I'm not ready to commit," she whispered back. (trying not to let his head swell to much lol)

Review:
The chemistry between Katie and Dylan is evident from the moment they met.  I loved watching them interact with each other and take the big plunge.  I had so many favorite parts of this book and several laugh out loud parts.  Katie has issues with a momma bear, and seeing how she deals with it, was priceless.  Again, all Virgin River books are like coming home to visit a cast of friends.  Lots of our favorites made a cameo, some more than others.  Tom Cavanaugh is home from the military, so I am curious to see where that leads, and who will finally steal his heart.

For You - Kristen Ashley

Book Blurb:
Lieutenant Alexander Colton and February Owens were high school sweethearts. Everyone in their small town knew from the moment they met they were meant for each other. But something happened and Feb broke Colt’s heart then she turned wild and tragedy struck. Colt meted out revenge against the man who brought Feb low but even though Colt risked it all for her, Feb turned her back on him and left town.

Fifteen years later, Feb comes back to help run the family bar. But there’s so much water under the bridge separating her and Colt everyone knows they’ll never get back together.

Until someone starts hacking up people in Feb’s life. Colt is still Colt and Feb is still Feb so the town watches as Colt goes all out to find the murderer while trying to keep Feb safe.

As the bodies pile up, The Feds move in and a twisting, turning story unravels exposing a very sick man who has claimed numerous victims along the way, Feb and Colt battle their enduring attraction and the beautiful but lost history that weaves them together.

In My Own Words:
Being the town couple has its drawbacks, especially when you break up with the town's golden boy and leave town for 15 years.  February came back to town to help her brother take over the town's bar, a local hangout that has been around forever and the family plans to keep it that way.  Coming back means facing a town that she believes she let down and the man she broke up with, and gave no explanation.  He plan now is to avoid him at all costs.  For 2 years, that plan works great, well not so great, but good enough to keep her sanity.  BUT, when a dead body is found behind the bar and it turns out that the body is a gift of sorts to Feb, Colt is called in and takes his protectin' seriously.  Colt has been best friends with Feb's brother since he was 5 years old.  He moved in and adopted the family in his teens.  Now that the love of his life is back, and someone seems to be looking for reasons to kill for her, he decides the best thing to do, is keep her close.  With her being that close, old feeling resurface.  Can the survive each other AND a psycho killer?

Notable Quote:
There were so many quotes in this book that made me chuckle, but I went with my absolute favorite.
"Sometimes, it's rare, but sometimes...men learn."  (Wisdom from Feb's mom)

Review:
This isn't your normal murder mystery kind of book.  You know early on who the crazy axe man is.  What takes times is finding out why and where he will strike next.  It was kind of refreshing to get to know who the bad guy is and back track to find his stressor and his reasoning.  Along the way, you get caught up in the family dynamics with the parents visiting, a brother trying to mend his marriage, friends that are there no matter what, and a town that is a gossip haven.  I enjoyed the story a great deal, what I didn't care all that much for was the editing, which I am seeing as a trend with this author.

No Turning Back - Tiffany Snow

Book Blurb:
After the death of her parents, Kathleen Turner leaves small town life for Indianapolis to pursue her dreams the best she can. Young and alone in the world, she works as a lowly Runner at the prestigious law firm of Gage, Kirk and Trent and bartends at night to make ends meet. Her ignominious introduction to Blane Kirk, partner in the firm and local playboy, has her diving under desks to avoid him. Unfortunately, when her friend is murdered and attempts are made on her own life she doesn't know where to turn - except to Blane.

Kathleen's journey begins in the halls of justice where she finds not everyone is as they seem and what you don't know can get you killed. Though a far cry from her Midwestern upbringing, she poses as a prostitute in the intriguing circles of high-priced escort services in a reckless bid to uncover the murderer. Little does she know that the murder of her friend was only a small part in a high-tech plan to rig an online election. She must race against the clock in a desperate ploy to sabotage the scheme in a dangerous game of political espionage.

In My Own Words:
Trying to make it on her own after the death of her parents, Kathleen heads to the big city to start fresh.  Being a runner in a large law firm is just the start she needs.  When she finds her head in her VERY HOT bosses lap during a meeting, she realizes she needs to keep her distance, not the best first impression.  Blaine couldn't disagree more, he was captivated from the moment he looked in to her eyes.  So when her car won't start, that is what starts them down a path of hookers, murderers, espionage and justice.

Review:
I really enjoyed parts of this book.  You pretty much could figure out the bad guys early on, but you weren't exactly sure which side Blaine was on until it was revealed.  There were a lot of LOL moments, and some moments that made you ::sigh:: and plenty of moments where you are shouting at the book, and wondering where this was going now.  I have to admit, I hope this isn't the last we see of CJ, she broke my heart, and I would love to see some redemption for her.  Now, for some of my dislikes, I really don't like the triangle with Blaine's brother.  It seemed like it wasn't a conflict that was needed with everything else going on.  I also didn't care for her using her body so much to get what she wanted. In the beginning it was mentioned that she has aspirations of being a lawyer, but she really acted ditzy at times.  I don't know that book #2 is in my future, as I am not really in to the love triangle thing, but I did enjoy this first one.

Wild Man - Kristen Ashley

In My Own Words:
Going about her business as a successful baker and owner of a popular bakers, Tessa likes to greet her customers, but when the door chimes and in walks Jake, she thinks God is being very kind to her that day.  Good looking and a smile that could bring a nun to her knees.  After dating for several months, Tessa finds out that "Jake" isn't really who he says he is and her heart is broken.  As she tries to mend her heart and go on about her life, Brock Lucas (Jake) walks back in to her life and isn't prepared to take no for an answer.  He knew the minute that he laid eyes on her, that she was more to him than an assignment. Now all he has to do is convince Tessa he is the man for her, and she needs to take ANOTHER chance.

Notable Quote:
"Would it piss you off to know that right about now I'm wondering if I walked in here yesterday because I missed my Tess or if it was because I missed her cupcakes?"

Review:
We met Slim in Mystery Man, he was the undercover agent that Hawk screwed up the investigation.  I was intrigued by him the moment I knew he was protecting Gwen in Mystery Man.  I was happy to see him get his very own HEA.  I am getting more disappointed in the editing of this series.  There tend to be a lot, as I am trying to overlook them, there seems to be an abundance, which, sadly does take away from the story.  I really liked Slim and Tess' story, they had it coming at them from every angle.  You had an ex-husband that wants his wife back, an ex-wife that makes it her lifes goal to be the biggest pain in the ass around and a family that needs glue to keep them together.  I loved the cast of girl friends, Elvira made me laugh out loud several times.  All in all a pretty good book, but lousy editing.

And as all this happens, Gwen finds that her sister’s troubles are serious trouble and she must decide who to keep alive: her sister-from-hell or the man of her dreams.

In My Own Words:
When Gwen's sister finds herself in deep trouble, Gwen realizes that her sister's trouble has now become hers as well.  Turning to the only man that is in her life, and by that she means the only man in her bed, she finds out just how serious this situation really is.  Until the police arrive, she doesn't even know her mystery man's name, and at a few points, she wishes she could forget it.  But, when the bullets fly, Hawk makes it his mission to keep Gwen safe, but is she safe with him??

Notable Quote:
"Woulda made a deal with the devil to get my wife and daughter back." He was still whispering and my breath stilled. "Don't have that chance so nothin' I can do about that. But I darkened your door, baby, and you lit up my life again so I'm not lettin' that go."  (*sigh*)

Review:
This was my first Kristen Ashley book, and you will see from reviews coming up, it wasn't my last.  I really loved this story.  The writing style took me a just bit to get used to, but once I did, I loved it.  Hawk is Alpha to the 10th degree and Gwen us just as stubborn.  I loved all of the secondary characters, Tack and Lawson...plus who can forget Dog?  Gwen had backbone and grit, Hawk is learning that is what he likes in a woman, but when her backbone gets in his way, he also realizes she has options, which kinda pisses him off even more.  Her sister, wasn't my favorite person, but I came to understand her in the end.  And not to give away spoilers, but in the Epilogue....I laughed, cried and giggles and finally the names made me cracked up.

Fatal Flaw - Marie Force

Book Blurb:
Back from their honeymoon, Senator Nick Cappuano and D.C. Police Lieutenant Sam Holland are ready for some normalcy after the whirlwind of their wedding, but someone has other plans for them. When Sam discovers wedding cards containing thinly veiled death threats, she's not sure if she or Nick is the target.

Already on edge, Sam and her team start investigating a series of baffling murders. The victims are well-liked with no known enemies, and the murders are carried out in a clean and efficient manner. Unable to find a clear motive for the deaths, she feels like she's chasing her tail.

With no obvious connection between the victims, Sam soon suspects that she may be the ultimate prize in the killer's clever game. When the danger starts to hit a little too close to home, she has two goals: find the elusive murderer and manage to live long enough to enjoy her happily-ever-after.

In My Own Words:
Who wants to go back to work after 2 weeks in Bora Bora?  In the past, Sam would have called about 300 times, sent 1000 emails and come home early.  The new married Sam, is wildly in love with her Senator husband (Nick) and doesn't want to miss a minute of time with him.  When the murders start to add up, and someone is also targeting Sam (sending nasty cards, shredding her clothes, etc...) the one person she usually bounces a case off of, Skip, can't help.  He is rushed to the hospital with pneumonia.  When nothing becomes clear, and there isn't any real connection between the suspects, an unlikely and powerful source comes to Sam's rescue and helps break the case wide open.

When the murderer is finally identified, Sam is more determined than ever to shut them down and get back to her "normal" life.  For this to happen, she needs the help of everyone in her life.

Notable Quote:
"Very fitting that you should turn the picture upside down since you've already turned my life upside down.  Revenge is sweet, my love."  (Sam and Nick in his office after she messed with his desk...again)

Review:
What an awesome addition to the Fatal series.  All of our old friends were back, Freddie, Gonzo and all of the PD crew.  Plus, Elin and Freddie's mom come in to play.  Not to mention Jeannie McBride.  And of course, Scotty.  The true here, in my opinion, in this book, was Michael, Jeannie's boyfriend.  Anyone that has gone through Jeannie's ordeal knows that patience is what is needed and the patience and love and support that he showed her made her feel safe, and that was exactly what she needed.  I was moved to tears several times during his scenes.  It was written PERFECTLY.  I find myself always wanting more and wanting the story longer, and I felt this one could have used an epilogue.  I understand that this is an ongoing series and there has to be some intrigue, I just didn't want the story to end.  Fatal Flaw is the perfect example of a book that the villain that you wouldn't exactly expect until you dig a little deeper, and luckily her "rock" was there for her when she really needed him and helped break the case wide open.  I love the dynamics of all of the characters, and when reading all of the Fatal books, I can picture myself there with them, I am totally ensconced in the story.  Can't wait for the next Fatal installment.

The Betrayal - Kathryn Shay

Book Blurb:
Darcy Weston flees to her grandparents’ abandoned farm after her stepfather rapes her. There, she meets Jordan Mackenzie, a local boy, and the friendship of a lifetime begins. Jordan helps sustain Darcy with food and water, and his company, for months, but eventually her whereabouts are discovered. In subsequent years, the two young people try to stay in touch from their disparate worlds, but eventually they drift apart.

Flash forward twelve years. Jordan is an accomplished teacher and Darcy, an internationally famous, reclusive artist. They meet again when Jordan publishes a book that reveals secrets about Darcy's past. But they find themselves thrown together first over the scandal his book creates, then over a murder. Once again, they turn to each other for help and comfort as they deal with police investigations, a variety of suspects from each other's worlds, and a passion between them which won't be denied.

In My Own Words:
Being 15 years old and on the run, Darcy hides in the only place she knows no one will think to look for her.  The farm her grandparents left her in upstate New York.  Trying to put the nightmare of her step father raping her and her mother not believing the accusation, what Darcy could really use is a friend.  Upon a chance encounter, that is exactly what she got.  Jordan was a 12 year old with an imagination and a pencil to keep track of his adventures.  When he met Darcy he just knew his life would be changed forever.  They became the best of friends, even after Darcy moved back home, staying in touch and seeing each other often.  Darcy realized that she was tarnishing young Jordan and he needed to find his own way, without her clouding his judgement.  She made the decision and cut him loose.

Move ahead 12 years, Jordan's mother is dying of cancer.  What he needs is a hit, a literary hit.  He knows he has a story that could be told, he knows that it would sky rocket his career and get him the much needed money to get his mom in to a clinical trial.  The downside to this, he would be publishing a book about a well known and very famous artist.  The same artist that he had loved back when he was 12 and he was 15.  Knowing this book would expose her, he attempts to contact.  When he was met with ice and coolness, he published it.  The book thus sending a series of events spiraling out of control.

Notable Quote:
"It was cool, mom. Especially when the girl delivered my pizza.  She came in and danced on the table for me." He wiggled his brows.

"Yeah?" She spoke as she got the wine out of the fridge. "How nice for you."  He liked it when she played along.  "Any questions you have about all that?"
(tired of his mother worrying about him being alone, young Jordan decided to make up a stripper visit)

Review:
The title of this book was accurate beyond words.  There was a list of betrayal from the first chapter till almost the end.  Everyone having a hand in some sort of betrayal.  A roller-coaster of love, hate, betrayal and murder all wrapped up in one book.  I liked the story a great deal, I really enjoyed watching young Jordan and Darcy get acquainted.  As the story progressed, you could almost feel the rage from the characters jumping off the page.  I loved how Darcy's art portrayed her mood and how her and Jordan could work together in their own versions of a trance.  I was pretty sure I knew who the ultimate betrayer was pretty early on, and I was right and disgusted by the finality of their "love".  While I really did love the story with the main characters, I was put off by a ton of typos.  It got to be really bad after a while.  I also thought some of the story seemed a bit...choppy and didn't flow.  There were some things left unanswered at the end of the book which also made the book lacking for me.  All in all a good story, but not one of my favorites.

Last Man Standing - Cindy Gerard

Book Blurb:
Special operative Joe Green has gone vigilante. His mission: avenge his Black Ops, Inc., brother’s death during a bloody ambush years ago in Sierra Leone. He refuses to drag the BOI team or his lover, Stephanie Tompkins, into the hunt for the man responsible, so when he finds himself beaten, starving, and alone after being falsely imprisoned for the murder of a Freetown priest, he knows he’s as good as dead. Joe meant to protect Stephanie when he walked out on their relationship, but he can’t stop her now from executing his escape. Breaking him out of prison is the easy part. After Joe’s explosive theory pans out and his cunning enemy emerges as the front runner for a high-level presidential appointment, he and Stephanie must race to derail the traitor’s conspiracy if they are to save their loved ones, the nation, and each other.

In My Own Words:
Before leaving to go back to Sierra Leone, Joe speaks words that will come back to haunt him.  Thinking it is best and that he is doing the right thing by her, Joe tell Stephanie that he doesn't love her, not enough. After a chance spotting of a photo at work, Stephanie realizes Joe is in serious trouble.  With all of the BOI's in the field and the skeleton crew recovering from other injuries or about to pop out a baby, Steph realizes she is all he has and takes off for parts unknown to bring back her man.  Once Joe is out and confides his suspicions to Stephanie, they realize this theory will have serious impacts on not only them, but America as well.  After they return to the states, they work tirelessly to prove what they suspect.  When they get to close though, bullets tend to fly.  In order to save each other, their family and friends and their country, they will have to rely on each other and hope they are together when it is all said and done.

Notable Quote:
"You are growing like a wart on my nose.  I love only to be rid of you."
(Suah and Joe's grand reunion)

Review:
Like most others, when I heard this would be the final book in the BOI series, I went through the 4 stages of grief.  I was intrigued how the author would bring this amazing series to a close and tie up all of the loose ends.  I have to say, she did it, and she did it well.  I loved Joe's book.  This book had it all, a really bad villain that you hope dies a horrible death, a hero/heroine love story that you hope give them a HEA, then you throw in babies and past couples and you have a recipe for a HIT.  It is a well known fact that my favorite couple is Reed and Crystal, but I have to admit, Joe and Stephanie come a close second.  One of the things I loved most was that Stephanie was able to dig down deep and find her bad-ass-ness and use it.  The fact that she busted Joe out of jail had me grinning like a little girl.  The epilogue made me cry, laugh and wish our BOI friends a fond farewell.

As Ryan and Kate search for answers, they uncover lies long buried, a passion hotter than either expected and a danger that threatens…even now…when the second chance they’ve both been searching for is finally within reach.

In My Own Words:

Ryan has gone through the past 5 years in a numb haze.  After losing the love of his life, the only thing he lives for now is his daughter Julia.  When Kate shows up out of the blue, he is confused as to what the heck is going on and hurt that she doesn't just run to his arms.  As they begin to dig deeper in to who she was and who she is now, lies, deceit and murder cross their paths.  With the help of her new found family, she is determined to get back what was lost.  If that includes a marriage to Ryan, she isn't so sure...

Notable Quote:
"Who the hell are you?" Ryan asked.
"I'm a friend of Kate's.  Who are you?"
"I'm her goddamn husband.  Can't you feel the love?"
(Tom meets Ryan for the first time while Kate and Ryan are having a "discussion")

Review:
A memory loss story with several twists and turns that keeps you turning the pages as fast as you can.  I thoroughly enjoyed this book.  It was recommended to me by several friends, and for some reason I just kept putting it off.  The stress of losing her memory added to the stress of losing her husband, only to find out that she actually has a living husband AND daughter.  A lesser woman would have caved under the intense pressure.  I fell in love immediately with her and her family.  I loved how Ryan tried to give in to her need to be Kate, but his need for her to be Annie, so he blended their name and called her Katie.  I enjoyed the banter between Kate's brother and Ryan, and the secondary romance between the brother and Simone was fun as well.  The children were written perfectly, I could actually picture Julia rolling her eyes.  A wonderfully refreshing romance.  A must read in my mind.

Blackout - Annie Solomon

Book Blurb:
A female black ops agent whose memory has been wipedclean is framed for the murder of the Deputy Director of the Terrorism Control Force - a man she doesn't remember knowing. As she tries tofigure out what happened to her she's pursued by the police, her ownagency and a mysterious watcher who may or may not believe in her innocence.

In My Own Words:
Waking up with a raging headache is one thing, but realizing she is missing a full month of her life is something totally different to deal with.  When Margo comes to the tough realization that not only is she not who she thought she was, she may have killed someone.  When Jake was asked to babysit as an assignment, he thought it was the most cush assignment ever handed to him.  When things start to go wrong he has to decide is Margo a really good actress or did she kill his best friend.  In the process of trying to find the truth, they also find a combustible spark.

Review:
This was my first book by Annie Solomon.  I wasn't disappointed.  There were so many twists and turns to the plot and I was constantly kept guessing.  I loved Margo and Jake together, neither one of them willing to give to much of themselves and yet pressing the other to give more.  It isn't often that we get to read about a kick ass female agent, so this was refreshing for me.
